Invasive Removal

We meet most months at Big Elk Creek State Park to claw back on understory invasive growth. A great activity suitable for all ages and all weathers, and extremely important.

Invasive plants are a huge ecological problem in our watershed. Because they have few local predators, they spread rapidly and outcompete our native species. We'd love you to join our team in restoring the forest biodiversity at Big Elk Creek State Park!

We’ll primarily be removing multiflora rose which is encroaching on an otherwise healthy patch of forest. The work can be physically demanding but there are jobs for all levels of activity. Please dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes and long pants, and bring any other personal items you may need. Work gloves and tools will be provided if you don’t bring your own. Bring your own water for hydration; no porta-potty is available.

We usually meet up and work 11:00am-1:00pm and followed by a stop at Old Stone Cider for any that are interested, but check the list below and the signup sheet for each date's starting time.

What to Bring and Wear

We will supply needed tools, but feel free to bring your own as well. It can be helpful to wear a belt for tool holsters. Participants should dress for the weather including:

- strong boots
- tick/insect repellent
- thick gloves
- water or coffee bottle
- NO porta-potty is available

Where We Meet

We normally meet at:
Unimproved lot on Appleton Road (see below or full map) but please let us know you are coming for final location and to receive cancellation alerts

If your car has very low clearance, let us know and we can ferry you over from a lot that is on Strickersville Road.
